In 2007, Bollywood was swept by the release of “Jab We Met,” a romantic comedy that became an enduring favorite in Indian cinema. However, off-screen, all eyes were on the dynamic between the film’s leads, Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Imtiaz Ali’s film encountered challenges as Shahid and Kareena broke up before shooting ended. However, Ali disclosed that it didn’t affect filming, because both actors remained professional on set.
In a recent interview Imtiaz Ali shared “Most of the film was shot. There were two days after their so-called break-up that we had to shoot. They were absolutely professional. No blemish, nothing at all, whatever is happening in their personal lives.” Their exemplary professionalism ensured the smooth progress of filming, resulting in a timeless cinematic gem that still captivates audiences today.
Looking back at the professional obstacles Shahid and Kareena encountered, Imtiaz recognized they were both dealing with a phase in their careers that lacked significant success. However, he emphasized how success in the film industry can be fleeting, stating “But as filmmakers we don’t have to speculate like the stock market, judge what we think is right for a particular part and only that works. This is the learning of my life.”
Imtiaz also discussed his decision to cast Shahid, mentioning that the actor appeared younger than he had envisioned. “He (Shahid) said he could wear glasses and clothes that would make him look the age. Kareena was my first choice; I had met her earlier for this film, but it hadn’t worked out at that point in time. But then she came on board,” he said.
Despite fans’ persistent inquiries about a potential sequel, Imtiaz Ali consistently stated that it’s not something he’s considering.
On the professional endeavor, Imtiaz Ali is enjoying the praise for his recent film, Amar Singh Chamkila, based on real story, which premiered on Netflix last month. The film’s star-studded cast includes Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh in the main leads.
