Kiran Rao: Marriage to Aamir Khan Due to Parental Influence

Kiran Rao's recent revelations about marriage shed light on her unique perspective, especially considering her past with Aamir Khan

The relationship between Aamir Khan and his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, has been a hot topic among gossip circles. The reason behind this is their continued friendly relationship, even after their separation. They are not just friends but also collaborate on projects together. Their son, Aazad, is co-parented by both of them. Recently, Kiran made a statement about the reason behind her divorce from Aamir, which garnered attention.

In a recent interview, the 50-year-old film director revealed that she wasn’t afraid of divorce. She talked about the heavy responsibilities women often carry after getting married. Kiran Rao highlighted how marriage can sometimes limit women’s freedom and potential, a topic often overlooked in discussions.

She said, “Aamir and I lived together for about a year before we got married, and honestly, we did it more because of parents. At that time too, we knew that it’s a great institution if you can function as an individual as well as a couple within that institution.”

Kiran also discussed the institution of marriage. She mentioned how it can “stifle” women with responsibilities. Kiran emphasised this point further.

“The thing we don’t talk about enough is how marriage tends to stifle, especially women. How you could find perhaps a way to be yourself within the institution. That’s something up for debate and discussion. Esther Perel (American psychologist) has written an amazing book on it, and it’s very interesting. As apes, we were living together. This nuclear family setup is a pressure, and it’s a pressure especially on women. There’s so much responsibility on the women to run the house, keep the family together. In fact, women are expected to keep in touch with the in-laws, to be in touch with your husband’s family. That’s a lot of expectation.”
